Human
Interfaces

What happens when we stop teaching people the language of computers and start teaching computers the languages people already use?

Humans already have interfaces.

Hands. Eyes. Voice. Body. Space. Material. Sound. We have spent thousands of years learning how to point, touch, arrange, listen, gesture, make and understand one another. AI makes a different question possible: what if computation became literate in those languages?

01
Speech · Gaze · Intent

Future Hardware Prediction

What if we stopped taking the phone out?

A hand points into a field of light.
02
Touch · Sequence · State

Abacus

The interface you don't have to look at.

Hands manipulate a tactile strand in darkness.
03
Pressure · Texture · Warmth

The Material Interface

What if computation could be felt rather than seen?

A hand presses into a responsive textile surface.
04
Objects · Relationships · Agency

Syntax

What if you could think with a computer the way you build with your hands?

Hands arrange a shared field of wooden objects.
05
Provenance · Memory · Agency

Oracle

I took a shortcut through Memorial Park and one of the tombstones told me to fuck off.

A path through an ordinary memorial park.
06
Composition · Chemistry · Flow

Salon

Don't give me an answer. Give me the right room.

A small salon gathered in a vast white room.
07
Material · Meaning · Presence

Substance

What if information had material properties?

A hand shaves a thin layer from a substantial paper form.
08
Touch · Behavior · Viscosity

Quicksilver

Touch is input. Behavior is output.

A finite set of reflective pools on a white working surface.
09
Questions · Resistance · Capability

Socratic

Don't answer me. Question me.

An empty chair and a question wait across a plain table.
10
Arrangement · Topology · Space

Programmable Surface

A screen can change what it looks like. What if a surface could change what it feels like?

A tactile surface deforms beneath a hand.
11
Gesture · Context · Agency

Gesture / Intent

Recognize the intention, not the pose.

A gesture doesn't have to mean anything by itself.

Intent lives between the signals.

Notes / Seeds

Color

Not every answer needs words. Could a small personal vocabulary of color communicate state, degree and uncertainty without demanding attention?

Sound

Pitch, rhythm, duration, harmony and silence already carry meaning through time. What if you and your computer developed a language that wasn't made of words?

Sign

The body is already capable of sophisticated symbolic language. The opportunity isn't to reduce sign language to UI gestures, but to make computation more capable of meeting people in languages they already use.

This is one conversation that became several ideas.

The images were generated during the discussion, not after it. Making the artifacts changed the questions: jewelry became Abacus; fabric became computational material; physical arrangement became Syntax; shared objects led to provenance and Oracle; composing people became Salon; layered paper became Substance; liquid metal became Quicksilver; Socratic questioning became adaptive intellectual resistance; sand suggested programmable topology; a shrug became evidence of intent. The work is preserved here at the point where each idea became useful enough to think with.
